April-June Hello there. It’s greetings from our brand new offices in 22 A Louws Avenue in Paarl where we now work together with the other divisions of Agri Mega in huge sun filled offices and pen spaces. It’s Soccer World Cup fever all around. It’s good and bad, just pick up your local paper, switch on the TV or talk to your neighbour. The good in the form of the first turbine of the Coega wind farm project in the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality that has been connected to the national power grid. Apparently this 25-turbine farm will produce electricity for the Mandela Bay stadium during the 2010 World Cup free of charge – each of the 25 wind turbines will have a 1.8MW capacity, ’which translates into an annual yield of 5.7-million kilowatt-hours, enough energy to power about 1700 households! Joburgers will also have fun watching some of it in 3D, because Sony plans to bring a premium 3D experience through a 3D Dome in Sandton. Property prices have gone mad if you look at the 28 properties sold in Camps Bay since October last year at an average price of R7-million! In the meantime (the not so good news) is that the SA Navy vessels are positioning themselves off Cape Town, and other coastal cities, to protect South Africa from potential water-borne attacks during this time. Whether good or bad, we hope for South Africans to welcome international visitors with open arms and to keep those headlights on – day and night – for the 31 days of this incredible happening on our doorstep! All things agricultural Opportunities from uncertainties gave rise to a new way of thinking and even Minister of Agriculture; Mr Gerrit van Rensburg said it is now – more than ever – time for farmers to embrace opportunities from uncertainties. The positive message of Theo Venter, political annalist, was well received. According to him, no attention must be given to leaders such as Malema, who wants to put fear into the hearts of many. “The biggest part of our nation is powerful enough to keep this country on course.” Activities included various agricultural conferences, debates, information days, workshops, women’s specific talks and much more. Communication forums created interaction between producers and the general public generating public awareness of the importance of agriculture. The exhibitions and demonstrations focussed on the broader and holistic production field and processing plants and processes. Mind the Gap was a definite hit when well-known industry leaders such as Johannes Möller, President of Agri SA, Dr Roelof Botha, independent economist and Judge Dennis Davis who’s also knowledgeable on labour related issues had talks at the Standard Bank Business breakfast. Goals were achieved and we are already looking forward to 2011’s Agri Cape Week. Barley success The barley producers are judged in two categories: Dry land and Irrigation producers. The Dry land region is divided in three sub regions (Caledon, Bredasdorp and Swellendam/Heidelberg). The only criteria for the competition are quality and the aim is of course to inspire barley producers to deliver quality products. From the category winners the regional winners is chosen and then the Barley Producer from the Year is chosen from these regional winners. Schalk Viljoen was chosen as Barley Producer of the Year for 2009 in the dry land area. Schalk farms in the Riviersonderend area on different farms, some of which he hires. Terroir terrific Only wines certified as Wine of Origin of a specific ward, estate or vineyard, will qualify for participation. The Wine and Sprits Board approved the concept and will confirm the validity of wines entered for the competition. Vineyard to wine Well-known people from the industry like Melody Botha, CEO: SA Wine Route Forum, Danie de Wet of Dewetshof, famous for his Chardonnays, Dr ST Potgieter, psychologist and motivational speaker, as well as Wanda Augustyn of WineLand and Marc Friederich, owner of Marc’s Restaurant and sommelier enlightened guests on the latest and hottest trends in service, food, the media and PR around the globe. The day, once again, proofed to be a huge success and the ladies and three gentlemen enjoyed themselves thoroughly. It’s a Mega event! The theme, Food Security in Action, will enlighten all who will attend. Clients and potential clients will be targeted to become part of Agri Mega Group’s objective to inform those in the primary agriculture sector with specific topics in grain, dairy and wool industry. It sometimes can be a logistic nightmare, but this ensures we work as creative and inspirational as possible. It will al come down to workshops, lady programmes, gala events, different competitions, information days, etcetera, etcetera … With this in mind, it’s time for us to get down to business. Have a cosy winter and keep those headlights on! Eunice Kotzé Contact us on: |
